DETAILS
This hotel project is located in a prime location close to King Abdullah Bin Abdul-Aziz square which overlooks the Red sea, and is in close proximity to Jeddah International Airport. This hotel component is 245 keys, with a further219 serviced apartment keys available. The total BUA for the development is 88,000 sqm consisting of 1 basement, 7 podiums and 32 upper floors. KPM provided the structural design services for this 165m tall building.
■ Implemented a robust structural approach with deep steel truss system and strategically placed columns to overcome the challenge of achieving a large column free ballroom (approx. 40x50m) which also had to support five levels of parking above.
■ Developed a bracing system to achieve an optimal and efficient structural frame for the building which achieves the required design parameters whilst also maintaining the architectural vision.
■ Provision of an eccentric core for the building which formed the basis of the overall structural design achieving the original design intent.
CHALLENGES
SOLUTIONS
Steel truss girders are provided in the ball area to achieve the column free space. The column was planted over the truss girder to provide the support for above floors and the loads are transferred to the foundation through the column supporting steel truss.
Maintaining the required spacing at specified MEP zones of the building, steel bracings connecting the columns are provided only at the periphery of the MEP floors to fulfil the serviceability criteria of the building without sacrificing architectural and façade intent.
